Enchanted to Meet You

Short Story Collection - Between Your Heart And Mine
1. Enchanted To Meet You

Love is blind.
That is what they all say. But how can we not be blind when we feel that warmth of another heart beside yours? I don't know myself what it means to fall in the depths of love without being a fool.

It was raining that evening. The sudden down-pouring cleaned the dusty city as the sky's blueness was being dyed grey. The noisy city seemed lifeless when the rain whispered, frantically, the tales of thousand of years ago. In that forever-crowded city you couldn't see now more than a few people, trying to find a shelter.
However, the calm sound of the raindrops hitting the ground seemed like an illusion that hypnotized every living creature. Even Trafalgar Square was quieter, as if it was haunted.
In the Hyde Park, only one person was hurrying back home. Her clothes were wet because of the sudden rain and sticking to her body. The pastel dress she wore became transparent because of the water and was hard to move in it. Next moment, a lovely but loud sound broke the rain's symphony.
"Yes, I'll be there as soon as possible!" she said the next second after she answered the phone call, then she looked at the furious sky. She put the little device in her purse and hurried up.
Come on, Katherine. What's wrong with you? she thought when she felt her body more tired than usual and hotter. You handed up the report, now you must get home. The rain is becoming heavier and you didn't bring an umbrella. Come on now, it's not the best time to run a fever. She continued talking to her inner self as she was talking with another person. She lived in the central London, near Knightsbridge and it was quite a distance before she could get home.
The girl felt her chest getting tight and her breath heavy as well as her eyesight became blurry; the dizziness from that morning didn't disappear. For a while, she felt her eyelids closing, and could barely stand awake.
Near Westminster only four or five people were passing by. She tried to find her way, but it was impossible.
"Ouch!" she said when she felt her body hitting something.
"Oh, are you all right?" a caring voice asked as she could feel two warm arms embracing her.
       "I...I am....just...slee..."
"What the... You're hot!" the stranger said looking at her red cheeks and checking her temperature.
It was good to feel somebody near you, pulling you two closer. She slowly closed her eyes, like she was falling into a deep sleep that'll last hundred of years. Her whole body felt numb, but at the same time, comfortable. The sound of rain echoed into her dreams too, bringing back bitter and sweet memories.

It has been so long since she heard the sound of the monochrome rain, it almost felt like it came from a faraway dream she had long ago. The small raindrops hit the window and then crawled until it met another drop, becoming one. It was already night; the moon was quietly watching the humans as it she was the queen above them. Only now and then you could hear a thunder screaming louder than the sky's tears.
Katherine woke up  with the feeling of dizziness still persisting  as if it was an illness. She tried to open her eyes and search through the room to realize where she is. She found herself in an unknown bed with crimson  bedding. The room was clean and organized, but it felt a little lonely. Only the flowers from the table gave a feeling of joy and serenity.
She looked at the clock - it was 7:49 PM- then at the nightstand where she found a piece of paper with something scratched on it in a hurry: I'm out for a while and I'll be back at 8. Wait until I return. Take the medicine I left you and rest some more. The storm didn't stop even now. In the next couple of minutes, the dark haired girl heard the door slamming quite loud.
"Damn that girl! She always does as she wants and never listens to others. I can't believe how much she changed in only six months! Damn it!"
The soft voice from the other time became fierce and annoyed like it was another person. He entered the room with a sour face and look at the girl who stared, frightened, at him. Now he could see her better: the long, wavy, dark chocolate hair covered her slender shoulders and her pale face was just like the one of a porcelain dolls. She wore a lapis lazuli ring which matched with her changing hazel eyes.
"Oh, you're awake! How are you feeling? Did the fever run down?" the man checked her temperature brushing her forehead with his soft and strong hand. Katherine could smell a sweet scent on his jacket, but it didn't match at all with his manly cologne.
       "So, your name is..."
       "Katherine. Katherine Grey"
"Katherine..." he repeated her name as if he wanted to engrave it on his mind. "I'm Louis Thomson."
"Thank you, Louis." She began to stare at him for a while, feeling that she met him long ago somewhere, but she couldn't recall anything. She rolled her eyes through the room, finding a picture of Louis and four other men.
Oh, they look like... the boys from that band. They're Henry, William, Nigel and Kevin. She looked once again at the man in front of her, realizing his identity.
"I..." both of them said at the same time but stopped. The sound of a slow song began to ring and Louis looked at the phone on the table, frowning. He answered the phone with a calm voice.
"Yeah, she's gone home." he breathed quickly and continued to speak "Yeah, tomorrow is fine; in the afternoon it'll be the best."
He hung up the phone, taking the bottle from the table and smiled gentle at her.
       "I should leave now..."
Her voice was slightly trembling, as those words echoed in his mind surprising him.
Louis shook his head in mock concern, "Why? I mean, it's already night and besides, it's still raining. It'll be dangerous to go out now, so you should rest some more." while in his eyes a little sparkle flickered passionately.
"W-well.. you see..." Silently she tried to find her shoes and dusty-pink jersey. She dressed up, ready to leave, but Lou grabbed her arm forcefully as if he didn't want to ever let her go. Inside her chest, Kate's heart raced, never has she been so close to see just how mesmerizing Louis' eyes can be. She felt weak and powerless as he took a step ahead, pulling her closer and then, both of them, falling on the bed.
"L-let go!" Katherine whispers, her voice shaky from emotion. He smirked looking at her begging face. "You'll get into trouble if I don't leave as soon as.."
"Come on, I won't." Louis assured her playing with her brown hair.
Quiet sounds of steps pierced the apartment's silence. A tall girl with dark curls cracked open the room, stepping into it and slashing the door behind her.
"What the... ?!" Her sharp and loud voice made Louis rise instantly and look at her.
"I thought you'll go home. What are you doing here, Ella?" he asked leaning his forehead in his hand. "N-no, that's not the main problem. What do you want?
"Who's that girl?" Ella asked fixing Katherine with her eyes, as if she was ready to kill anytime.
"None of your business. Let's talk in the living-room." Louis opened the door, showing his girlfriend the right way to the selected place. "I'll be back in a few minutes." he told Katherine
       "Take your time."
Louis closed the door, his voice becoming louder as if he never left the room.
She's different from him. Well, if they're in love and happy together, then.. she thought looking at a photo of the two lovers holding hands. Her shouting pierced the walls, his fight-back seemed like a cry. Poor thing!
Everything turned upside down when William broke up with Dana, his girlfriend and Ella's best friend. After a month, the band went to France and Spain and other three countries for a mini-tour. In meanwhile, Ella met a guy, a dancer, and became close friends. In the last two months they became intimate but Louis found out about their relationship from another friend of his.
"I had enough!" Lou shouted at the girl in front of him "I really thank you for all the good time we spent together, but I can't take it anymore. It's time to part ways!"
"What the hell are you saying? After I entered the room and saw you with another woman in bed, do you think it'll end as you please? Moreover, after you were cheating on me with that... that.."
"You're the one to talk. Sleeping with that man right after we met, sneaking behind my back and being with him. Don't you have any pride?" he was ready to burst anytime.
Katherine felt her chest heavy, breathing harder than usual. She put her hand on her neck, as if she was trying to feel with her palm the pain. Looking for water, she couldn't find even the bottle Louis took from the fridge. The girl opened slowly the door, her breath becoming hot as well as her face. She looked at Louis and Ella who were still arguing.
"Louis.." she interrupted them. Louis turned around when he heard her voice, analyzing her. "May I have some water? My throat is sore..."
"Your face is red. Do you run a fever again?" once again he touched her face gently. "Go back in bed. I'll bring you some water."
"Thank you." she left the room leaning against the wall, the door closing behind her, Louis following her after a few seconds, then returns sighing, looking at his girlfriend.
"It's useless to waste any more time arguing." he said trying to find his way out of the fight.
"Well, it seems you are quite fond of her. What's the matter, Louis, are you tired of me?" she hissed, disgust in her tone as she takes a step away from the singer. She keeps her head high, looking down at him, and crosses her arms waiting for an answer. She was expecting him to deny and somehow, to beg her to take him back. The smirk on her face showed every thought she had and every intention. She thought they'll make up as always: in bed. Ella was now that kind of her, the kind Louis hated.
"To be honest..." he exhaled "... yeah, I'm already tired. I think everything shall end tonight." he stroke his hair while looking at her amazed glance. She opened her lips as if she wanted to say something, but then stopped. The girl knew she couldn't complain about anything. When they were together, Louis was perfect. He had that gift to make the people around him feel as if they had the time of their life. He was flawless.
Ella didn't say anything; she just walked out of the room, her pigtails bounding around her big head as she slammed the door behind her.
He sighed happily, feeling as if the weights he was carrying lifted up. I should check on Kate. he thought heading towards his room.
The room was dark, only the lights of the city were shining, flickering. Katherine sat upright raking her hands through her hair staring at him. She was beautiful. Her legs were tucked under the white sheets and her long curls were loose over her shoulders. She turned around, an expression of pain in her dark, cat-like eyes.
"Do you love her?" she asked in a low voice
       "No!" he said defensively
Kate drew in her breath and stared at the place around them. The large room was cosy and rustic with a strong air of modernism. The white on the walls was sickening and lonely, only the light fittings gave a romantic sparkle.
In the silent room, only their breath could be heard, rhythmic and soft, like an old lullaby. The night covered them in a lustful glow, city bathing them into it's lonely lights until dawn came with the hope of a new beginning.
Until they'll be almost lovers...
